Sustainable construction is quite a new and novel concept in the civil engineering world. This concept was introduced as a derivation of the concept of sustainable development. Sustainable development itself was developed by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) to mitigate the adverse impacts of environmental problems i.e global warming and climate changes.
Sustainable construction is defined as “the creation and responsible management of a healthy built environment based on resource efficient and ecological principles” (Kibert, 2007). This definition became the starting point for the concept of sustainable construction as elaborated in the Agenda 21 for Sustainable Construction and Agenda 21 for Sustainable Construction in Developing Countries by the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (formerly known as Conseil International du Bâtiment), an international research organization in the field of building and construction.
