Special Topics in CEM is a course offered by the Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) specifically designed to discuss one or several recent and up to date topics regarding CEM which can’t be adequately covered in regular course. For the first semester of 2011/2012, this course discuss exclusively the principles of sustainability in regard to the construction processes.
Sustainable construction is a concept which was derived from sustainable development, which in itself is developed to counter and mitigate the negative effects of environmental problems such as global warming and climate changes. The basic issue of “sustainability” is how it can become an integral part of our values system. The practical implementation of sustainability principles which should be known by a civil engineer is the implementation of “cradle-to-grave” or “cradle-to-cradle” concept during the life cycle of physical infrastructure, and also how those concepts can be achieved.
This course present several guest lectures to incorporate the state-of-practice of sustainable construction within the Indonesian construction industry. These include lectures from the government, environmental specialist, construction company, and also engineer/architect. A field study and a final individual project are also included.
